This is a continuation of the temporary suspension of our standardized testing requirement, and it will be re-evaluated for the Fall 2027 application cycle. RPI welcomes students of all identities, abilities, and backgrounds, and aims to provide an equitable and inclusive experience in higher education both in our campus community, and within the classrooms. Non-management majors cannot count the course as part of the Math/Science requirement.

Undergraduate Admissions

Any student who applies to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an undergraduate in the fall of 2026 will be able to choose whether or not to submit SAT or ACT scores. While there is flexibility to change your major once you are here, you are encouraged to be as specific as you can when you choose a major (or school) on your application. If you are interested in the Architecture, Electronic Arts, Music, or Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences program, we recommend that you apply directly to that program. Students interested in the Accelerated Physician-Scientist (B.S./M.D.) Program must apply directly to that program. Computer Science Students who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 on the A test will receive credit for Computer Science I (CSCI 1100), four credit hours. Students who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 on the Computer Science Principles exam will receive credit for CSCI-1000 Computer Science Elective, four credit hours.

  • BiologyStudents who earn a grade of 6 or 7 will receive credit for BIOL-1010, three credit hours, and BIOL-1015, one credit hour.

Students will not receive credit for ENGR-2600, Modeling and Analysis of Uncertainty. Engineering students who are required to take Materials Science for Engineers should register for ENGR-1600 to complete the pre-engineering chemistry/materials requirement. Foreign LanguagesStudents who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 in World Language and Culture will receive 4 credits for LANG-1000, Foreign Language Elective. AP courses include French Language and Culture, German Language and Culture, Italian Language and Culture, Japanese Language and Culture, Latin or Spanish Language and Culture, and Spanish Literature and Culture.

Course descriptions can be found in your current college’s course catalog and may be copied and pasted into a Word document. If you would like to transfer AP, IB, or A level credit from your high school, make sure your official test results are sent directly to the Registrar’s Office. I am looking to join RPI in Fall 2024 to dual major in Physics and Computer Science. I was hoping that I would be able to leverage my AP Credits (i have mainly 5s and 1 4 as scores) to offset the courses that I would need to take.

How do I express demonstrated interest in RPI if I cannot visit campus?

The Registrar will have courses evaluated by the appropriate departments on campus. The student’s file must include photocopies of course descriptions of all courses for which the student requests transfer credit consideration. No grade is given for transfer credit and it is not included in calculating the QPA.

HistoryStudents who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 on the United States History, European History, or World History examination will receive credit for STSO-1000, Humanities Elective, four credit hours. All standardized tests must be taken by the December test date (by the November test date for Physician-Scientist Program applicants). Students with extenuating financial or medical/health-related circumstances can request a housing waiver; however, waivers are only granted for extreme and extenuating circumstances.

New rules for AP Credit

  • Currently, Glimpse is only available for U.S. students attending high school in the United States.
  • Students who wish to defer their enrollment may take courses on a non-matriculated basis at another institution.
  • African American StudiesStudents who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 will receive credit for STSO-1000, STSO Elective, four credit hours.
  • Human GeographyStudents who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 will receive credit for STSO-1000, Social Science Elective, four credit hours.

Signing a lease off-campus, living locally, or roommate concerns will not typically result in a housing waiver. PhysicsStudents who earn a grade of 6 or 7 will receive credit for PHYS-1100 and PHYS-1200, Physics I and II, eight credit hours. MathematicsStudents who earn a grade of 6 or 7 will receive credit for MATH-1010, Calculus I, four credit hours. ChemistryStudents who earn a grade of 6 or 7 will receive credit for CHEM-1100 and CHEM-1200, Chemistry I and II, eight credit hours. BiologyStudents who earn a grade of 6 or 7 will receive credit for BIOL-1010, three credit hours, and BIOL-1015, one credit hour.

For consideration in RPI’s admissions process, Glimpse videos must be submitted by 11/15 for Early Decision I, 12/15 for Early Action, 1/10 for Early Decision II, and 1/29 for Regular Decision. In general, if you earn a score of 6 or 7 on the higher-level exam, you will usually be granted academic credit at RPI. Students who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 on the microeconomics exam receive four credits for ECON-1000, Economics Elective. Students who achieve a grade of 4 or 5 on the macroeconomics exam receive four credits for ECON-1000, Economics Elective.

It provides students with the opportunity to live, learn, and experience RPI and the local Troy area with members of their cohort. In the past, a student’s race/ethnicity has been just one aspect of a holistic review process at RPI. Supreme Court Decision SFFA v. Harvard and SFFA v. UNC (2023), RPI now suppresses all student race/ethnicity data (collected in the recruitment and application phases) during the application review process. Credit is granted to many entering freshmen through Advanced Placement (AP) courses taken at high schools. You will need to submit test score reports to our Registrar’s Office before registering for classes. Students are required to submit all requests for prior credit by the end of their first year. Yes, all first and second-year students are required to live on campus and participate in a meal plan. Living on campus is a critical component of the CLASS (Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students) experience.
